Dhow Sailing Across a Blue Lagoon
Zanzibar, Tanzania, September 2000

Dhow sailboats are still a common mode of transportation on islands off the east coast of Africa.  One day, I decided to test their seaworthiness on a snorkeling trip to a nearby reef.  The hull was made from pieces of driftwood and what looked like the door to someone's house.  The sail was patchwork of old rice sacks, roughly stitched together and still displaying their fading brand names.  While our captain struggled to sail to boat, the 'first mate' was perpetually busy with a bucket, emptying water from the leaky hull.
