Taking in the View
of the Harding Icefield

Alaska, United States, July 2000

I started hiking at 8pm.  But in Alaska, where daylight wanes at midnight in midsummer, I had plenty of time to reach the lookout before sunset.  It took an hour and a half to climb to the viewpoint, with the last half hour hiking through ankle-deep snow.  The view was well worth the climb.  Far below, the Harding Icefield stretched out as far as the horizon, an enormous sheet of snow and ice the size of Rhode Island.
