Leopard in the Serengeti
Serengeti, Tanzania, August 2000

Driving across the dusty savanna of the Serengeti, I was startled to see a gazelle sleeping in a tree.  Our guide explained that the gazelle was dead, killed by a leopard, and hauled up the tree to keep it away from other predators.  The leopard was nearby. We spotted it sleeping in the upper branches of an acacia tree. An hour later, it woke from a late morning nap, stealthily walked to another branch, yawned, and fell asleep again.
