Woman Arranging a Fishing Net
Zanzibar, Tanzania, September 2000

The mythical spice island of Zanzibar was the perfect place to kick back and relax after climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and a weeklong safari in Tanzania.  Aside from a few scattered bungalows, the east coast of the island was still largely undeveloped.  Sitting in the shade of a coconut palm on a beach of fine white coral sand, I looked out onto an endless sapphire blue lagoon.  In the afternoon, the tide ebbed and I waded through the shallow lagoon for half an hour before the water got too deep.  The residents of the nearby village also came out at this time, harvesting sea weed, stalking octopus with sharp spears and arranging their fishing nets.
