Sunset in Salvador
As night fell in Salvador, the city came alive with color and light and sound. Sidewalk restaurants spilled into the streets and as crowds gathered in Terreiro de Jesus square for a concert. An impromptu capoeira performance captured my attention for a moment. Then, it was the vibrant rhythms and costumes of a musical group, dancing through the streets in practice for the upcoming carnival. The music was everywhere, rising from the rattling drums of street performers, drifting down from open windows, feeding the raw energy of the crowd. Copyright 2000 Martin Wierzbicki |
