Getting ready to take the plunge

My name is Martin Wierzbicki and in June 2000 I left behind my job in New York to travel around the world.

Both travel and photography have always been important creative interests for me, and without the everyday pressures of work, I had plenty of time to take a lot of photos.  This web site is dedicated to those photographs from my trip.

My travels first led me to Africa, where I spent three months traveling overland by bus, boat, train and truck from Tanzania to South Africa.  Next, I touched down in South America, wandering from the beaches of Brazil to the southern tip Chile over the course of two months.  After returning home to spend the holidays with my family, I set off again for Asia.  For six months I traveled through six countries, including two months trekking in Nepal and two months on the beach in Thailand, probably the highlights of my entire trip.  From Asia, I continued to Europe, where I sailed through the Greek Islands, marveled at Ottoman splendor in Turkey, feasted on tapas and sangria in Spain, and even managed to pick up a little Spanish: "Donde esta la fiesta esta noche?"

Unfortunately, all good things eventually come to an end, and I finally returned home from my trip in 2002 and moved to San Francisco.  To share my experiences with friends and family, I've published some of my photos on the web.

Learning to sail

You can browse through photo galleries for each country or take a look at some of my favorite photos from around the world.  Some of the pictures have more detailed notes so you can read about the particular location or situation.  I’ve also written a few stories based on my travel experiences.  But if you're looking for some better writing, read this by my sister, she’s a much more talented writer and recently returned from a trip of her own.

If you have any questions about the places I've been, or you've been to some of the same places yourself and would like to share your experiences, I’d love to hear from you.

I hope you enjoy your visit!
