In February 2001, I spent four weeks traveling through Vietnam, exploring the Old Quarter of Hanoi, hiking through hill tribe villages near Sapa, and drifting down ancient waterways in Hoa Lu. The highlight of my trip to Vietnam was a week in Hoi An, a small, sleepy village about halfway down the coast between Hanoi and Saigon.
